  • Government announcement provides the industry with an opportunity to respond
  • Zero Carbon Hub to host a series of workshops for all stakeholders

The Zero Carbon Hub, which was set up earlier this year with the goal of helping deliver the UK Government’s target for all new build homes to be zero carbon from 2016, has welcomed today’s announcement that government will consult regarding the new zero carbon definition.

To aid the consultation process the Zero Carbon Hub will be hosting, with support from the Department for Communities and Local Government, a series of workshops across England in February 2009 to explain the definition and outline the likely changes it will have on the house-building industry, as well providing a means for feedback.

Neil Jefferson, chief executive, Zero Carbon Hub commented: “We welcome today’s announcement by the Department for Communities and Local Government to launch a consultation process on the definition of zero carbon. It is a direct response to industry uncertainty and concern over the previous definition which was seen by some parts of the industry as unworkable. We will now seek to evaluate the new definition hand to hand with the industry as part of the Zero Carbon Hub’s core dissemination and delivery role.

We anticipate a wide range of views from those within the industry and believe that our workshops will provide designers, housebuilders and product manufacturers with the opportunity to really have their say – and help ensure that the final definition of zero carbon is one that is deliverable and supported by the industry, provides consumers with homes that are warm, comfortable and inexpensive to run and helps towards the Government meeting its target of an 80 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.”

Stakeholder workshops, run by Zero Carbon Hub, will take place throughout February 2009 in the form of afternoon and early evening events, more details to follow, with the following dates confirmed:

  • FEB 10: LEEDS
  • FEB 11: HAYDOCK
