Hub welcomes announcement on zero carbon new homes

Date Issued: 27/07/2010
The Zero Carbon Hub welcomes Housing Minister Grant Shapps’ announcement today on ‘New flexibilities for builders and councils to make new homes zero-carbon’.

The announcement made today by the Housing Minister is a timely and important step forward on the road to zero carbon homes. In the announcement, the Minister re-affirmed his commitment to all new homes being zero-carbon from 2016 and confirmed the introduction of the ‘Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard', proposals developed by a Hub-lead Task Group last year.

The Minister also said he would explore the feasibility of the community energy fund, where developers would make payments to support local energy schemes as part of allowable solutions. This is known to be strongly supported by many in the industry and is a welcome step to ensuring the Zero Carbon Time Line is kept on track.

Neil Jefferson, Chief Executive said:

“I welcome today's announcement and am pleased that the coalition government will implement the Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard developed last year by a Zero Carbon Hub Task Group. I am also delighted with the confirmation of government funding of the Hub to the end of the year, to supplement our private sector contributions.

“We look forward again to working with a broad range of organisations, this time to develop and test a national benchmark for carbon compliance. Coming immediately after the Carbon Compliance for Tomorrow New Homes task group, the timing is perfect”.
